A high stone wall, a door of light-colored wood, and a stone path surrounded by Jerusalem foliage invite us into one of city’s secluded corners of beauty - the Schatz House. In this house, ensconced in the heart of the “Bezalel” precinct, there lived four artists—two generations bound to the roots of Israeli art in the modern era. Boris Schatz, a fascinating, tempestuous, and visionary artist, was the founder of the “Bezalel” Academy of Art. His children, Lilik and Zahara, and his daughter in law Louise also became artists in their own right. Schatz’s turbulent life is surveyed through photographs of his various works of art; a film documenting “Bezalel” in the early twentieth century is interfused with pictures from the present-day “Bezalel” Academy; dozens of works of art created by the Schatz’s second generation are photographed against the background of the rich spaces in which they were created—One house, two generations, a barrage of beauty, creation, and vision.
